Return of the She-King

Return of the She-King is a project I dove into as a way to better understand workflows revolving around USD(universal scene description), MaterialX, and Solaris.

The project is based on an original concept by Senior Concept Artist, Gabriele Nicastro.

While the initial concept was not created by me,
I knew I wanted to take on the challenge of all aspects needed to bring this to completion.

So I began to work, slowly chipping away at everything over the past few weeks. Everything from the environment modeling, layout, fx, lighting, texturing, shading, compositing, etc.

Testing of possible grades

Next up…lasers???

I then began working on an effect that would serve as motivation for the effects that are to follow.

I knew I also wanted this effect to be able to create a form of tension and build anticipation throughout the shot.

To do this I decided to go with a laser system similar to what can be found in The Creator, or a weapon known as The Hammer of Dawn from the Gears of War game franchise.

Both references served a great deal of help in conceptualizing the visuals, and timing.

I also took a lot of inspiration from the animators Yutaka Nakamura’s and Kazunori Ozawa’s use of timing

Time for things to go boom!
